If you’ve seen my reviews of biodegradable, bamboo, or non-toxic diapers, you’ll know that I love a chemical-free diaper. Do Huggies Special Delivery diapers have chemicals? I think that Huggies, with all of its money and resources, could easily produce a diaper that’s predominantly plant-based. It’s also worth remembering that the terms ‘plant-based’ and ‘natural’ aren’t regulated by the FDA, so they’re often used in marketing to make products sound a lot more environmentally-friendly than they really are – or, in other words, ‘greenwashing’. Read Next: Pampers Pure Protection Review: Are They Really Pure? Pampers doesn’t tell us the percentage of plant-based materials used in their Pure Protection variety at all. While 23% is a pretty low percentage of plant-based materials (the rest is presumably plastic), I’m glad that Huggies make this percentage clear. It does state that they use sugar cane though. ![]() Huggies Special Delivery diapers are made from 23% plant-based materials, although the company isn’t very transparent about what these are. It’s a win-win! Do Huggies Special Delivery diapers use plant-based materials? Diapers that use plant materials tend to be much softer than their plastic counterparts, and they usually contain fewer toxins and chemicals. Plant-based diapers, which might use the wood pulp, bamboo, or cane, aren’t only heaps better for the environment (they’re renewable resources for a start), but they’re kinder to our babies’ skin too. The vast majority of disposable diapers are made with petroleum-based plastics, so it’s no shock that the diaper industry is a huge contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. We’ve looked at Pampers Pure Protection, and how it isn’t quite as pure as you’d hope, but what about Huggies’ plant-based product? How does it fare when it comes to keeping our babies happy and healthy and doing its bit to reduce the terrible impact the industry has on our planet? Is it really a special delivery, or is Huggies, like so many other companies, guilty of greenwashing? But as the biggest and most profitable diaper brands with the money and resources to offer super eco-friendly products, you’d expect them to be lightyears ahead in their looking-after-the-world practices.īoth companies offer what they market as their eco-friendly varieties – Pampers Pure Protection and Huggies Special Delivery. We all know that big brands like Huggies and Pampers offer diapers we can trust, for their ability to prevent leaks, at least. ![]() ![]() ![]() What makes RescueTime interesting: RescueTime provides One-Click Offline Time Tracking where it automatically prompts us to one-click add Offline Time when you’ve been away so you have a full picture of your day.If you want to read about the thinking behind it, you can read our launch post on Hacker News. Thus, although the terms "least squares" and "linear model" are closely linked, they are not synonymous.įormulation In linear regression, the observations ( red) are assumed to be the result of random deviations ( green) from an underlying relationship ( blue) between a dependent variable ( y) and an independent variable ( x). Conversely, the least squares approach can be used to fit models that are not linear models. Linear regression models are often fitted using the least squares approach, but they may also be fitted in other ways, such as by minimizing the "lack of fit" in some other norm (as with least absolute deviations regression), or by minimizing a penalized version of the least squares cost function as in ridge regression ( L 2-norm penalty) and lasso ( L 1-norm penalty). If the goal is to explain variation in the response variable that can be attributed to variation in the explanatory variables, linear regression analysis can be applied to quantify the strength of the relationship between the response and the explanatory variables, and in particular to determine whether some explanatory variables may have no linear relationship with the response at all, or to identify which subsets of explanatory variables may contain redundant information about the response. After developing such a model, if additional values of the explanatory variables are collected without an accompanying response value, the fitted model can be used to make a prediction of the response. If the goal is error reduction in prediction or forecasting, linear regression can be used to fit a predictive model to an observed data set of values of the response and explanatory variables. Most applications fall into one of the following two broad categories: Linear regression has many practical uses. ![]() ![]() This is because models which depend linearly on their unknown parameters are easier to fit than models which are non-linearly related to their parameters and because the statistical properties of the resulting estimators are easier to determine. Linear regression was the first type of regression analysis to be studied rigorously, and to be used extensively in practical applications. Like all forms of regression analysis, linear regression focuses on the conditional probability distribution of the response given the values of the predictors, rather than on the joint probability distribution of all of these variables, which is the domain of multivariate analysis. Most commonly, the conditional mean of the response given the values of the explanatory variables (or predictors) is assumed to be an affine function of those values less commonly, the conditional median or some other quantile is used. In linear regression, the relationships are modeled using linear predictor functions whose unknown model parameters are estimated from the data. This term is distinct from multivariate linear regression, where multiple correlated dependent variables are predicted, rather than a single scalar variable. The case of one explanatory variable is called simple linear regression for more than one, the process is called multiple linear regression. In statistics, linear regression is a linear approach for modelling the relationship between a scalar response and one or more explanatory variables (also known as dependent and independent variables). Group 2 is known as the alkaline earth elements for much the same reason. However, these elements are neither rare in abundance nor "earths" (an obsolete term for water-insoluble strongly basic oxides of electropositive metals incapable of being smelted into metal using late 18th century technology). The "earth" in the name "rare earths" arises from the minerals from which they were isolated, which were uncommon oxide-type minerals. Together with the two elements at the top of group 3, scandium and yttrium, the trivial name " rare earths" is sometimes used to describe all the lanthanides. The term derives from lanthanum, first discovered in 1838, at that time a so-called new rare-earth element "lying hidden" or "escaping notice" in a cerium mineral, and it is an irony that lanthanum was later identified as the first in an entire series of chemically similar elements and gave its name to the whole series. Rather than referring to their natural abundance, the word reflects their property of "hiding" behind each other in minerals. Despite their abundance, the technical term "lanthanides" is interpreted to reflect a sense of elusiveness on the part of these elements, as it comes from the Greek λανθανειν ( lanthanein), "to lie hidden". ![]() The term "lanthanide" was introduced by Victor Goldschmidt in 1925. Primordial From decay Synthetic Border shows natural occurrence of the element Etymology However, owing to widespread current use, lanthanide is still allowed. The 1985 IUPAC "Red Book" (p. 45) recommends using lanthanoid instead of lanthanide, as the ending -ide normally indicates a negative ion. This convention is entirely a matter of aesthetics and formatting practicality a rarely used wide-formatted periodic table inserts the 4f and 5f series in their proper places, as parts of the table's sixth and seventh rows (periods). In presentations of the periodic table, the f-block elements are customarily shown as two additional rows below the main body of the table. Since "lanthanide" means "like lanthanum", it has been argued that lanthanum cannot logically be a lanthanide, but the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) acknowledges its inclusion based on common usage. These elements are called lanthanides because the elements in the series are chemically similar to lanthanum. All lanthanide elements form trivalent cations, Ln 3+, whose chemistry is largely determined by the ionic radius, which decreases steadily from lanthanum (La) to lutetium (Lu). ![]() ![]() Lutetium is a d-block element (thus also a transition metal), and on this basis its inclusion has been questioned however, it (as well as scandium and yttrium in group 3) behaves similarly to the other 14. All but one of the lanthanides are f-block elements, corresponding to the filling of the 4f electron shell. The informal chemical symbol Ln is used in general discussions of lanthanide chemistry to refer to any lanthanide. These elements, along with the chemically similar elements scandium and yttrium, are often collectively known as the rare-earth elements or rare-earth metals. ![]() ![]() Develop Understanding with Benchmark Fractions Read the post about numerators and denominators here. My friend Rachel has begun our series with a post on simple ways to introduce the numerator and denominator (and created a fantastic free printable activity!). ![]() The fact that a number has been written as a fraction, implies something about those two parts, called the numerator and denominator. Understanding fractions has to begin with seeing the fraction as a number, rather than two separate whole numbers. Fraction Sense Begins with Understanding the Numerator and Denominator They will develop number sense and fraction sense. So if we instead teach fractions with visuals, hands on models, and so on, and seek to teach them in a conceptual way, they won’t see math as a set of rules devoid of logic. It’s built on the reality of the world around us. When we do that, we are telling them essentially, “Just do it like this, even though it’s completely nonsensical, and you’ll get the right answer.” We don’t want to teach our kids rules or tricks without any kind of context or conceptual understanding. So what we need to understand is that fraction sense is built on a solid foundation of logic and common sense. Fraction sense is tied to common sense: Students with fraction sense can reason about fractions and don’t apply rules and procedures blindly nor do they give nonsensical answers to problems involving fractions.“ To begin, I want to share a helpful definition of fraction sense that I read this week from the book Beyond Pizzas and Pies by Julie McNamara and Megan Shaughnessy:įraction sense implies a deep and flexible understanding of fractions that is not dependent on any one context or type of problem.
